Setting up a ‘mini kitchen for learning activities’ is an exciting idea to involve pupils in practical lessons and teach them useful life skills. This can also be an opportunity to learn about healthy eating, different cultures and the environment. Here are some ideas for setting up a kitchen for learning activities:
Space and equipment:
The kitchen should have enough space for small groups of students to use safely. Equipment needed: Work table, blender, hand blender and tools such as knives, spoons and measuring cups. If a fully equipped kitchen is not available, small appliances such as a toaster and electric cooker can be used.
Topics:
Pupils can develop various activities to explore topics such as nutrition and health through cooking. They learn about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet and the benefits it has for the body.
International cookery: Pupils can try out recipes from different cultures and learn about the history and traditions of cooking.
Food science: Pupils learn how chemical reactions take place during cooking (e.g. hardening eggs or fermenting dough).
Maths in the kitchen:
Learners consolidate maths concepts such as measuring proportions during food preparation.
Safety in the kitchen: Learners learn about hygiene and safety, handling sharp tools and other equipment.
Recipe help: Simple recipes are provided that can be prepared in groups, such as salads, sandwiches, pasta or simple desserts.
Group work: Participants can prepare different dishes in small groups and learn from each other.
Discussion and reflection: After preparing the meal, a discussion can take place about the process and what was learnt from the activity. Cooking can be a wonderful tool to develop many skills, from practical to intellectual.
